Weak Export Demand Keeps Ukrainian Barley Prices Under Pressure
Ukrainian feed barley bids fell to $140–150/t as September exports dropped to 72 thsd tons from 234 thsd a year ago, while Middle East tenders clear above $300/t CIF.
Market notes
- Ukrainian feed barley export bids stand at UAH 6,500–7,000/t ($140–150/t) delivered to Danube ports and western border terminals.
- September barley exports (first 28 days) fell to 72 thsd tons from 234 thsd tons a year earlier; 2026/27 MY-to-date exports are 440 thsd tons vs 825 thsd tons.
- Middle Eastern tender buying levels reached $300–310/t CIF; Tunisia purchased at $304–307/t C&F on September 23.
- Jordan rejected offers for 120 thsd tons of feed barley on September 30 due to high prices.
- EU barley exports fell 40% to 1.95 mln tons through September 27; French feed barley is around €215/t ($244/t) FOB Rouen.
Ukrainian feed barley export bids have fallen to UAH 6,500–7,000/t, or $140–150/t, delivered to Danube ports and western border terminals, as weak foreign demand compounds high logistics costs and falling wheat and corn prices.
Data reported by UkrAgroConsult on October 1 show the slide running through every domestic buyer category:
- Export bid prices: UAH 6,500–7,000/t ($140–150/t), delivered Danube ports and western border terminals
- Domestic processors: UAH 5,500–6,000/t
- Malt plants, spring malting barley: UAH 6,700–7,000/t
Domestic consumption remains limited, leaving exporters as the marginal buyer — and exporters are not buying at last season's pace.
How far behind is the export campaign?
Ukraine shipped only 72 thousand tons of barley in the first 28 days of September, against 234 thousand tons in the same window a year earlier — a 69% decline. Since the start of the 2026/27 marketing year, cumulative exports stand at 440 thousand tons versus 825 thousand tons at this point last season, a shortfall of 385 thousand tons.
Why do world prices stay high while Ukrainian bids fall?
International buying levels remain far above what Ukrainian sellers can capture. Middle Eastern import tenders have reached $300–310/t CIF — roughly double the delivered Ukrainian bid in dollar terms — implying that logistics costs are absorbing much of the arbitrage for Black Sea-origin barley.
Two tender results from late September illustrate importer behavior:
- Jordan rejected all offers for 120 thousand tons of feed barley on September 30, citing high prices
- Tunisia bought barley on September 23 at $304–307/t C&F
What is happening in the EU, Ukraine's competing origin?
The European Union cut barley exports by 40% from the start of the season through September 27, shipping 1.95 million tons, mainly because of weaker demand from China. Purchases by Saudi Arabia and Jordan are supporting the European market, and physical prices for French feed barley hold around €215/t, or $244/t FOB Rouen.
That EU price floor, some $94–104/t above Ukrainian delivered bids, signals where Ukrainian values could move if export demand recovers — but until freight and basis normalize, Ukrainian growers face continued margin pressure at the farm gate, with processors offering the lowest prices in the chain at UAH 5,500–6,000/t.
With French supply still commanding a premium and Middle Eastern tenders clearing above $300/t CIF, the gap between world values and Ukrainian farm-gate prices will hinge on whether export volumes rebuild from September's 72 thousand tons over the coming weeks.
